Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a safe examination without radiation, which uses a powerful magnetic field, radio frequency waves, receiving antennas and a sophisticated computer system to obtain accurate and multidimensional images of the human body.

MRI has revolutionized radiology, especially with its superior ability to differentiate between tissues. It is a method of choice for evaluating the brain, spine, musculoskeletal system, temporomandibular articulations (TMA), blood vessels and circulatory system, and allows characterization of abdominopelvic and breast lesions.

Breast MR is indicated in two specific situations. First, it can help in the screening of breast cancer, in association with mammography. This is for patients with high risk of breast cancer through their lifetime. It includes patients with BRCA-1 and BRCA-2 gene mutation, as well as their first untested first relative. Also, patients with rare disease like Li-Fraumeni syndrome, Cowden syndrome and Bannayan-Riley-Ruvalcaba syndrome, as well as their first degree relative. Women who underwent chest irradiation between the age of 10 and 30 years can also be screened with breast MR. Finally, any women with a risk of 20% or more as determined with different risk assessment models can also be included. Breast MR also have a place in the evaluation of patient who had a recent diagnosis of breast cancer, especially if it is an invasive lobular carcinoma. Exceptionally, breast MR can be useful in the assessment of the extent of the disease in certain women, helping to plan treatment accordingly.

We have the latest technology in magnetic resonance imaging, including a wide-bore system, to accommodate claustrophobic or bariatric patients.

Upon arrival, our staff welcomes you to check-in for your exam on the third floor.

The technologist will place you in a comfortable position within the MRI system, with the body part to be imaged placed at the center of the receiving antenna. You may contact the technologist by microphone at any time during the exam. Using headphones, you can also listen to the radio or to music of your choice.

The exam duration varies between 15 and 60 minutes; most exams last around thirty minutes.

Some studies require the injection of a contrast medium (gadolinium), which is generally well tolerated. Side effects are rare.

It is very rare that claustrophobic patients fail to complete their MRI. Our experienced staff assists you throughout the exam and our clinic has a wide-bore system. Sometimes, the prescription of anti-anxiety medication by your doctor can help. In this case, you must be accompanied and are not allowed to drive.

To complete the interpretation of the images obtained, it is important to bring with you, THE DAY OF YOUR APPOINTMENT, images and reports of previous exams related to the study that you will undergo at our clinic.

Preparation: do not wear makeup or jewelry during the exam
When arriving for your appointment, make sure you have:
• The original request signed by your doctor.
• Your health insurance card to check in for your appointment.
• The payment method for your exam.
• The images (on CD) and copies of the reports of previous exams related to your scheduled exam.

Please arrive 30 minutes early to receive a free parking coupon, available in front, and to check-in for your appointment.

Please make sure you have the contraindications for MRI form completed by your doctor.

Avoid wearing makeup or jewelry during the examination.

Some exams require an injection of contrast product (gadolinium). In some instances, an assessment of renal function using a blood test (creatinine) may be required in advance. You will be notified when the appointment is made.

For an abdominal MRI: fast 4 hours before the exam.

Length of examination: about 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the exam.
Digital device used: Siemens Aera 1.5T
Siemens Avanto 1.5T
Copy of images: upon request, images are copied onto a CD (no charge for the first copy; $10 for each additional copy).
